I downloaded this movie only to discover the rar file was passworded and I checked back at the site I got it from and the torrent was deleted.
So there's another negative review for this movie right there. Unable to watch.

Unable to watch illegaly. I'm sure it's not as difficult to watch it if you go out and see it in the cinema

So other than Jude Law/Robert Downey Jr. is this worth going to the see on the big screen?

I read a review that says yes if you haven't read any Sherlock Holmes and no if you have.

I've read lots of Sherlock Holmes stories, and I wasn't bothered in the least by the license taken in this story. If you perhaps enjoy reading your Sherlock Holmes tales whilst lounging in a velvet dressing gown by the firelight in your country mansion, then you may be put off by the action-movie twist.

But I what saw of the characterizations in this movie was quite faithful in its substance, even if you debate the intensity. All the quirks you see in the characters do have a basis found in the stories? it's just been concentrated into an Extra-Strength formula for a Hollywood movie. If the Holmes fans object, it is not for anything being added as embellishment, but rather because of all that which was already there having been intensified.

Take this for granted: tales written in the Victorian and Edwardian eras had their own ideas of what was 'intense'. An audience of the 21st Century has a far different threshold for conflict. This movie does toe the line as a Holmes adventure? if you take a hundred years of inflation into account.

Hell, the movie showed one aspect of the Holmes-Watson relationship that the ever-so-faithful adaptations rarely touched upon: the guys did have a bull dog for a pet at one time. And yes, despite what Holmes asserted, it was actually Watson's dog.

The dog was adorable!

I mean, I've read some of the books, but you really can't go to the theatre and think that a movie by fuckin Guy Ritchie is going to be accurate to the novels. More like some insane fan fiction that was well written by someone who's kinda steampunk in origin.

I think you'd have to be mad to assume the film is going to be even remotely 100% accurate to the books. That's like assuming any comic book movie is going to be the exact same as the comics. It's an adaptation! None of the Sherlock Holmes adaptations have been similar to the books either, from what I've heard.

Anyway, I never read any of the books or saw anything to do with Holmes before this movie and I enjoyed it

Good catch Mr. Hally. I could also tell by the mud on her boots, a certain kind of mud only found by the old quarries West of London, that she is far from her ancestral Mid-Western continental United States. Something is afoot!
