Yeah. I appreciate that you'd have the Newtonian problem of equal and opposite reactions to deal with, but I think we've seen that the shields are pretty effective (given how long they held for anyway).

Probably not controllable and would weaken the shield. I also don't think the shield can do that, we've never seen it be able to just open in parts have we?

Perhaps not, but we have seen numerous occasions of "all power to the forward shields" (at the expense of the rear). Essentially, they didn't need to contain the blast, just redirect it.

Presumably the ancient city shield is superior to the azgard ship shield. Also, if it's actually the city shield that they were able to collapse around the gate (remember, it wasn't the iris they used there), then they have a fair amount of flexibility around the shape of the shield.

praps, but they've never put specific holes in it though. And it might be more advanced, but the ability to put gaps in the shield like that might not have been something the ancients thought of, or ever needed as their ships pass through the shield anyway...

I'm sure the atlantis folks would have been able to come up with a way to do that, but quickly, on the fly, under that pressure?

I came up with it, within moments of it being made clear the shield wasn't going to hold. They wouldn't need to even 'make a hole', just make one side weaker than another. An asymmetric failure would be far more desirable than what we saw.
