see i keep thinking that or a spherical shield letting one side weaken and bust would still end up in a rupture of the rest.. kina like a water baloon

A water balloon is an elastic surface with nothing to hold it in place once a piece breaks. A better analogy would be like holding zillions of crickets in your hands. They're all jumping around like crazy. You can either just open up your hands and they'll go everywhere, or you can make a little opening and they'll all start to filter out through that hole whilst you keep your hands in place.

It's not really a better analogy

Allowing all that energy to flow out would mean uneven loading on the shields and thus the shield emitters (One part may get far more energy loading than it would have without the hole... picture the space shuttle's wing with a hole in it, or a bridge taking a trains weight in one spot). Not to mention contending with the gate wanting to move one way whilst the other end acts like some fat mother of a rocket.

What they probably did in their last 10 seconds (or the writers did anyway) was to transfer the shield to protect their segment of the room, or form a bubble round them as they removed the bubble from the gate.

Yeah, I was thinking it'd be like one of them baking soda rockets if you opened one side. Given though that they moved a shield with emitters all over the station to something relatively small then... it can't have been that hard. In truth though, your idea sounds more realistic in terms of saving lives. If you can't contain it, don't try, just ride it out in a smaller bubble.
