Is SGU getting better?

Well that episode had aliens and a space battle so it was a bit better than what has been shown thus far, but I don't know if can truly redeem itself for all those boring episodes, especially since they've hinted at more mistrust and bullshit to come.
It just makes the show so uncomfortable to watch, everyone hates each other, all the women are massive bitches, nobody on the show is likable, it's kind of frustrating.
I've been rewatching Atlantis, it's so much better.

I like Eli, the blonde doctor, and the new IT guy. But yeah, far too much drama and crap with everyone. I want some more traditional Stargate!

i think that the show is doing fairly well, perhaps it was a bit slow to get going, but we already know that they have been renewed for a second season so we will get a chance to see how the show plays out, after all SG-1 had a few crap seasons.. notable any part that refernced ori and the season with jonas in it :p

i think that the show has definatly become alot darker, espesialy after the considerably light star gate atlantis, that show never realy had me on the edge of my seat wondering if a charicter would die, or not. conventional stargate ie SG-1 and Atlantis had a realy good run, but i think that they were becomeing to comical and too popcirn sci-fi for my likeing.

im not saying that they were not extreemly injoyable shows but i think that stargate had to reinvent itself or die, weather they can pull of a lost/battlestar style show is another thing entirly but comparing it to the previous stargate shows is just folly.

let universe be its own show, instead of wanting just another cookie sci-fi show that takes no effort from the viewer. if stargate had of continued with another spin off thats only disimilarites to SG-1 and atlantis was that they were in a new place with new people, but ever 2 or 3 eppiusode somone from the old shows would come on, it would have died a horrable death, as a fanserve and for being akin to yet another procedural cop show.

i see the potential in universe. i just hope that it gets a chance to show it

I just hope it doesn't become another full-fledged Battlestar Galactica with all the character in-fighting (and in-fracking) and far too much drama. I love BSG now, but I also loved the lightness of Stargate.

Making it darker and more character driven is cool, but I just hope they don't go too far.

teen 04-04-2010 11:27 AM

Well I don't understand what you guys mean by 'darker' and 'lighter', I think those are just bullshit ways to justify boringness with no story or distinguishable characters.

I don't have a problem with character driven plots, or making the show deeper like lost, but that is most definitely not what is going on here.

If Stargate was Batman, then Stargate Universe would be the one where it's ALWAYS night time in Gotham and Batman has nipples. It's absolutely cheesier than anything they did on SG-1 or Atlantis - those shows were imaginative, creative, they did a lot of work on costumes and sets and new and very memorable characters.

I'm not "comparing" it to previous Stargate shows, other than to point out that they were good and enjoyable, whereas this is tedious, difficult to understand, and as a fan does not make me feel enthusiastic about it.

I've never watched Battlestar Galactica, it looks like a terrible b-grade scifi, and in that sense I do understand the comparison to SGU.

If they intended to make a show like Battlestar Galactica, why not make it in that franchise?

effort from the viewer
I realise that you're a bit of a retard Death so I try not to respond to anything specific you say, but even you must see how stupid this comment is. What exactly am I suppose to do to understand this show when I don't even give a fuck about anything that happens in it? Do I have to take screenshots of people's very similar looking faces and make notes about everything they say just to figure out what the story is?

It doesn't even make sense that if people, professional people, were in a situation like this they would all act like such massive assholes. I don't see any redeeming qualities in these characters that would make a person think "oh that person would be great on a stargate type team working at some remote base on another planet". They all seem like such hostile babies.

It's obvious that the newbs like Cooper, Mullie, and Mallozzi, hated their jobs and wanted to work on another show. It was always obvious even on SG-1 that they wished they were writing for Star Trek or something. They are such fuckwads.

well maybe a good start would be to learn who the charicters actualy are.. after all it is a charicter driven show. after half a season (half a season of charicter building mind you) you should have worked them out by now

Bose 04-05-2010 12:36 AM

I like SGU. It's like BSG.

teen 04-05-2010 01:11 AM

Death, both points are valid arguments as to why it's a poorly written show. I don't have this trouble with any other show. Look at lost, there are way more characters in that, but they are all memorable, I could write an essay on each one.

DEATH 04-05-2010 02:59 AM

no lost doesnt require any effort on your part. they give you there history as flashbacks. not make you do some work for it by actualy listening to the dialouge.
lost has spoon fed you its charicter. each an archatype, each one looking remotly different from the others. hell half of em even have different accents.

use your brain and you will find a show that is quite rewarding to watch

teen 04-05-2010 07:53 AM

You fail at stories if you think that as an audience members I need to "do some work". Talking about what has happened isn't storytelling, showing what happened is storytelling.
Yes characters should look different from each other.
I don't know why you try to turn every negative point into some sort of positive 'challenge' for the viewer. I bet you loved warhead lollies as kid "These are fucking disgusting - GREAT!!!"
