Gone
Jack sat in his chair. He didn't want it to be this way. It was wrong.
General Hammond looked at him whilst Teal'c explained the situation.
"Jack?" Jack looked at George.
"Mm?"
"I can't even begin to imagine what you're feeling, but I think we're going
to have to face the truth." Jack put his head in his hands. George was
right. He had to face it.
Major Samantha Carter was dead.
"Colonel, go home," Jonas advised him.
"Jonas, call me Jack." He took his advice and left.
Slamming the door shut, he fell onto his chair and wept many bitter tears.
Sam was gone, just like Daniel, but more gone. Dead gone, not ascended gone.
The tears kept coming.
It had happened so fast. There they were, on a routine mission, when a fire
had erupted around them. Sam had called out, dragged away by flames. Then
the flames had died away, and all that was left of Sam was her hat. Jonas
had had to support Teal'c because his leg had been burnt badly. They'd
dialled up, but Jack had been reluctant to leave, in case Sam was still out
there alive. Then the flames roared in again, this time with a skull. Jack
picked up her hat and the skull and ran through the gate. That was that.
The tears kept coming.
He sat down in the infirmary the next day. Janet had red eyes, but said
little about it. She was trying to shut it out. Jack wanted to do the same.
He knew that was as impossible as walking on water.
Tests were being run on the skull to prove it was Sam's, but Jack knew they
would be conclusive.
Sam was dead. He was damned if they were to replace her like they had with
Danny. She was irreplaceable. He already missed her blue eyes, shining when
she laughed, or when she was chattering about the latest mineral survey on
P3X-889 or wherever they had been. She was the smartest person he knew. Had
known. Damn the past tense, thought Jack.
The days flew by without Sam. SG-1 had been removed from the mission list
for a week, to recuperate. Hammond had not advised Jack on getting a
replacement. Jack was thankful for that.
Then, on an ordinary day, the power shut down. Jack ran to the gate room.
The gate was still powering up. The wormhole was active, but the iris was
retracted because of the power failure. A body floated through, then came to
rest on the ramp. The gate shut down and power came back online. Jack looked
at the body.
It was Sam.
She was alive but just. Janet had revived her, but Sam talked to no one.
Then she spoke. SG-1 were in the room. Her voice was harsh and hollow. It
was not Sam.
"Who are you and where am I?"
"We're damned if you think we're going to tell you squat!" Jack retorted.
"You value her life. You will not kill her."
"Is she still alive?"
"Yes. She cannot hear you, nor see you, nor communicate with you. Only I
can."
"What?"
"You will not kill her. I will live to destroy you all." With that, Sam lay
down and stared at them.
He sat with her. She stared lifeless at him, but he knew she could not see.
A tear rolled down his cheek. Glad that no one else was here to witness
that... The entity had said she was no longer able to hear them, see them,
communicate with them. He wanted to hear her technobabble again. He would
love to hear her technobabble again.
A tear rolled down her cheek. Jack knew. He knew she could hear him.
"Sam. Please, fight this. Fight it from the inside. Only you can kill it
from in there." Another tear fell down his cheek.
"Please."
Sam sat up. The entity had taken over again.
"She cannot hear you," it harped. "She cannot."
Jack knew she had.
Jack turned the corner to find a blockade. The rest of SG-1 were demanding
entrance to see Sam, but the guard said he couldn't let them in.
"Jack! She's gone into arrest. They won't let us see her," informed Jonas.
The colour flooded away from Jack's face. Arrest...
"To the observation room!" They ran up to find Hammond already there, his
face pale and stony. He merely looked as the team pressed their faces to the
glass.
Janet was loading up the defibrillator. Sam was motionless.
"C'mon, Sam." Jonas looked at Jack. His face was resolute. "C'mon, Sam.
Fight it. I know you can, damn it." Jonas looked at Sam's face. It was
contorted into a look of determination. Weird, thought Jonas. He began to
hum. Teal'c looked at him.
"Why are you humming, Jonas?"
"It makes me feel like I'm supporting her." Teal'c nodded. He began to hum
along. Jack sighed. If you can't beat them. He hummed along, too.
Somewhere, somehow, Sam heard.
A twitch on the monitor. A heartbeat! Sam was alive! Janet managed to
stabilise her and smiled up at the observatory glass. Jack had his eyes
firmly shut, still humming the first few bars of Star Wars.
"Colonel?" He opened an eye. Janet was smiling. That meant...
The team rushed to Sam's side. She was awake and everything!
"I fought him, sir. I fought him," she murmured. Jack smiled.
"Yeah, you fought him good, Carter. We thought we'd lost you there."
"Uh-uh. I'm not going anywhere." She smiled back
