I haven't checked starguide in ages, so today i went and checked it out. Alot of you will probably have read the following articles:

http://www.scifiguide.net/stargate/news/011021_1.html
http://www.scifiguide.net/stargate/news/011022_1.html

In short, these both contain clues that the spin-off series will be called Stargate: Atlantis. MGM have apparently purchased four domain names along the lines of Stargate Atlantis (as reported in the second URL).

The title of Stargate: Atlantis seems to me to be a little cliched, but then again, Atlantis is an icon of ancient races and exploration.

It also sounds like the film will set the new series up.

So, if this is old news, then rant and rave at me now, if not, then what do you lot think the new series will be about?

This is already sounding MUCH BETTER THAN SG-1.

Let's face it "Stargate SG-1" was a very gay idea for a TV series.

"Stargate: Atlantis" is heaps better.

Let's hope macgyver is not involved.

I don't think Richard Dean Anderson will be in the new series. However, you never know what might happen. He may appear in the odd episode all depending on what the series will be about. Perhaps it may focus on an off world base called "Atlantis Base"? They may have found the original world that the ancients came from and set up a base on that world.

Wow, interesting idea. I thought Starguide said something about how it might be wrong...

I can see it now:

Atlantis was the most advanced bastion of human resistance against the Goa'uld all those centuries ago. The Goa'uld believed that they successfully destroyed Atlantis, but the events they set in motion nevertheless evicted the Goa'uld from Earth.

Now, millenia later, the SGC re-discovers the people of Atlantis, a race best poised to take on the Goa'uld on their own terms. And an SG team gets stranded on Atlantis, and now act as advisors and adds whatever help they can in the fight in the universe.

I don't know about the idea of a team being stranded on Atlantis.

The way i can envision it, is that the SGC discovers the world of Atlantis in the film, and they find it contains the secret of the Goa'uld. This sets up a huge battle between in the SGC and Earth so that they can use the stuff in Atlantis to finally put an end to the Goa'uld.

Then the new series would take over, with a base being built on Atlantis. But, what dark secrets does this world hold?

---

The only problem I see with a spin-off series is that we've already seen it all before, and with the same (or part of) the team behind SG-1, it will probably follow the same path as the current series.

Good point. I mean, in the end (it doesn't even matter, [sorry, just quoting Linkin Park, don't mind me]) how can they make the program so different that it's not about exploring the galaxy...?

Maybe they could set it on Atlantis, and do about the society and stuff, with the Goa'uld or various other problems dropping by now and then...

i dont like the 'stranded' idea. nor the idea that it's based around only one culture. I'd like the spin off to have kind of the same premise as the current series - exploring the galaxy, that kinda stuff.. have interactions with the SGC, so ppl like Hammond, Fraiser, Harriman, Siler etc etc can pop up occasionally...

but you know, whatever. i'd be happy just to see a spin off, no matter what it's about, i guess.. as long as it was good...

If they don't make it about exploring the Galaxy then it will turn into Deep Space Nine. A Sci-Fi show that is based in one place therefore it will have to be built on the foundations of the characters rather than the concepts. Wheras Stargate I believe is based on the not just the characters, but the concept because not everone watches the show for the same reasons which is why it has a broad fan base.

Some people say, they've explored the galaxy for the past 5-6 years, what more have they got to find? I really hate peeps that say this because the great thing about this is that Galaxies are huge, almost limitless. In our History it took hundreds and thousands of years to explore our own friggen planet and then you get these smart ass computer geeks who think the world only extends as far as their backyards who think you can explore a Galaxy in a few years. lol yeah.

I didn't say SG-1 has already explored the galaxy.

what i meant was that we've already been getting earth-set plots, where the writers haven't been able to think of new plots, where the teams go off-world and find new civilisations.

Take Star Trek for instance (recieves loads of groans). The Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager were all made by the same teams. By the end of Voyager's last season even ST's long term fans were getting bored with it all, because of the plots which have been repeated several times in each series since the original one.

Enterprise has been getting much better reviews... and is being made by an almost new team (some of the veterans have stayed on).

In my opinion, if this new series is to be made, then I say get some new blood in the production teams, with fresh ideas, before SG-1 turns into a franchise which MGM just won't let die, just like Paramount with Star Trek.

ash, i agree with you - keep the basic premise, set up, sets and props, but this is an excellent opportunity to inject 'new blood' into the writing and production team. There are hundreds if not more, fantastic writers out there than have brilliant ideas for the show, new ideas, done by people who haven't been blinkered and worn out by years of doing the same show, like i suspect the writers of SG-1 have...

I also agree with Indiana, in that the reason the fan base is so diverse, is because there are so many different elements to the show. Characters alone will not carry a series, especially of this kind. Lonegunmen anyone...? The characters we loved from the X files, but they were just trying to pull the crowds on those guys alone, and not coming up with any decent plots, decent writing etc. which is a shame, cause it too had potential.

At any rate, i think a spin off series will be a HUGE risk to anyone invloved.. they would be banking on people who watched SG-1 to watch the new show, but if it doesn't have the main cast, a lot of people might not watch it. Plus, it will have been based on a relatively obscure TV show based on an equally (relatively) obscure Movie made in the early 90's. Good luck.
