Thanksgiving in America

OK... I'm all for having to day to "give thanks", but I must admit that this is one of my least favorite holidays of the year.

Reason #1: I hate American football. Yes, I'm an American that hates this game. I hate the "tradition" of Thanksgiving that involves sitting for hours in front of the TV watching this dreadful game. I makes me feel claustrophobic - I usually avoid the TV room like the plague.

Reason #2: Spending 4-6 hours making a giant meal, then 1 hour eating it, then 1 hour cleaning up... OK - what's fun about that? I've been trying to convince my family for years that we should all just go out to a restaurant, that way we pay someone else to make our food, serve us, and clean up... and we can all sit around and enjoy each others company.

Am I the only one?

I'm with you Roy, but for different reasons:

1. I *love* american football, but the turkey day games are usually turkeys. I prefer college ball, anyway. Lots more fun.

2. I want to stay home, wear casual clothes, and watch the X-Files marathon on SciFi , but nooooooooooooooooooooooo.

3. No, I gotta dress up in uncomfortable clothes, drive 45 miles to my folks house, pick them up, drive another 45 to my sister-in-laws who is a Martha Stewart wannabe. She sets a beautiful table but she's so obsessed with perfection that she is completely frazzled and angry and worn out by the early afternoon and she turns into the she-devil from hell. Everyone ends up upset and annoyed and no one has a good time. Plus I hate turkey.

Then I gotta drive 45 miles back to my folks house, then 45 miles more to my own house.

The only good thing is I get Friday off work too, and Saturday I'll be at a (hopefully) awesome football game.

Actually my idea of the best thanksgiving day would be to send out for pizza.

not to sound rude or anything, but as a poorly-educated brit i've always wondered what is it you say thanks for and who to...

hmm... that was supposed to be a question but it came out more like a statement

Copy and pasted from my response to this question last year when someone asked about our "stupid Yank tradition"...
quote:
This "stupid Yank tradition" is what springs up when a group of people give up the comfort and familiarity of their homeland and end up far, far away from their ancestors in a land that is strange, scary, and wholly capable of killing you. A North American winter is nothing to laugh at. As prosperous and bountiful the forests and farmlands are on the American frontier, the New England winters were perfectly capable of starving off entire colonies.

The Thanksgiving feast was a celebration by the Puritan Pilgrims in surviving the previous winter and attaining a bountiful harvest in the late summer, ensuring that the following winters would not be as harsh. It's a celebration of survival.

Of course, that meaning is completely lost to us in this day and age. How many people (Americans, notably) continue to hoard and store food against the fear of starvation in the winter months? The closest thing to winter hardships of that nature we'd face today is when the price of produce at the local supermarket rockets up.

I believe that we American's give thanks in general for "the good life". If I remember my school lessons correctly, the first Thanksgiving was a formal dinner attended by colonists (Puritans) and Native American indians. It was a type of friendship celebration - I think.

So, Thanksgiving isn't a "Thank You" to anyone specific, just general appreciation.

I have to admit is great to have yet another holiday to sit around and do nothing, but as far as i amconcerned Thanksgiving has been blown way out of porportion over the years. And Shiloh i can sympathize I have a Aunt like that, Everything must be perfect. she runs around the house screaming at every one. Basiclly the familly trys to hide in the living room.

I will probibly watch some movies on some marathons or go out with friends, there is no reason anyone should be hating the holiday, you don't *have* to do anything, and your out of work/school so stop whining.

Aaw, we don't get a thanksgiving! We should have one to thank each other for not blowing up the world with a nuclear weapon.

Come on people!!!!!! Stop dissing Thanksgiving!!!!!!!!!! It's probably the second most important holiday in America, (Christmas being the first).

Thanksgiving is the day when the pilgrims gave thanks to GOD for letting them make it on the Mayflower and finding friends in the native Indians. The first Thanksgiving was the Indians and the pilgrims. It's a day that America celebrates to show that we love our land and God. Though I'm sad to say that God has been taken out of the picture lately. I hope someday America will smell the coffee and start thanking God again, we did a little after 9/11.
