Once and For All?

Im thinking, there are about five threads floating about regarding the constellations, DHDs, and the glyph system. There seem to be two schools of thought. The first, that the dialling system is based on "Telephone numbers" - eg, no matter where you are in the network, you can reach anywhere else by always dialling the same glyphs. The second is that the glyphs required to get from one place to another in the network depends on where you are coming from and where you are going to. Post here which side of the fence you are on, and why. Hopefully then we can have a reasoned argument/debate and come to a conclusion.

I think the stargate's like a telephone cept sometimes you have to dail another glyph to get out of our solar system (Fifth Man). Something like that anyway.

I am definately of the opinion that the co-ordinates/glyphs to dial a gate all depend on what gate you are dialling from and where you intend to go. Basically because it is the most common sense approach, in line with experience of travel in all other forms. The route to school/work for example is different for you as for someone on the other side of town. Additionally, it is more likely to be chosen to avoid non technically advanced races using the gates. For example, the dullards, a simple race, send an interpid idiot through the gate using a code they found out. Because the dullards do not know astronomy very well, they cannot figure out from the glpyhs where this code will take the idiot, and once he is there, he cannot figure out by using the skies where he is, and so cannot find the return code. The rest of the dullards come to the conclusion that he died and so do not send anyone else through the gate. This also ties in with the fact that the glyphs on the earth DHD show earth constellations, and that the Abydos glyphs were different. I had other arguments, but I cant remember them, I will have to post this, then get them from the various other threads.

The people who made the gate would logically have progressed from cave dwelling etc, up through nuclear energy, on to Stargates etc. At the earlier stages of their development, they would likely have also hit on the idea of studying the stars, and grouping them (every other culture on Earth has), and so the constellations would have been known to them before they built the gate. Using the apparent directions of them from a stationary point relative to Sol as a method of determining destination makes the most sense, since they are *almost* fixed points of reference. Now, using these glyphs is fine on Earth, but on any other star, how then do you know what glyphs will take you somewhere?

There, from another thread
