Considering how dependent the US is on international trade and the free and open flow of it, we're not too strong.
That's why the fingers in everyone's pie and the flexing.
For the US to thrive, it needs to try and ensure things like terrorism and high prices don't impede it.
Which means avoiding any situations that could result in any sort of major coalition against us.
Sort of a built in restraining system.
You need to look at it systemically (how everything is interdependent) and not adversarially to get the best chance of seeing what the reality is.
The Middle East, by comparison, are "me-centric" and don't like owing anyone anything. Idealists who can't compromise, for the most part.
So, the ones with the $$$ get what they want, the ones who don't fight with anyone and everyone, mostly amongst themselves.
