Yes, in more ways than one...

I'm late in my comments for this episode, but with the forum going up and down, I was unable to post.

I was really disappointed with this episode. The only aspect I liked was the special effects. The plot was predictable.

When the team was repairing the ship, where was Teal'c? It didn't make any sense to me why we didn't see Teal'c training the team on how to fly the ship or help with repairs.

Defusing the bomb was lame. What luck! Seven wires to cut and Jack picked the right one each time. What are the probabilities on that! Of course, we know they're not going to blow up the main characters.

Also incredible was Jack and Teal'c fixing the air leaks within two hours.

I also had a few problems with this ep.

1. How come Sam, the physics expert, suddenly knows more about bombs than Jack, who spent most of his career in the field. It was established in the movie that Jack knows how to blow stuff up real good. So why was Sam talking him through defusing the bomb? (Also, why didn't they have an instruction manual - it was THEIR bomb?)

2. Plot nothing but a ripoff of Armmagedon. I kept expecting to hear Aerosmith in the background.

3. Daniel actually thinks up the idea to save the world, but Super Sam butts in and gets the credit.

4. Teal'c and Daniel wallpaper as usual.

However, General Hammond had a couple of nice scenes.

hmm... well as a brit who doesn't have sky and so watches the dodgy 20 meg .asf files... i think i'll pass

i kinda was thinkin armeggedon all the way... especially when they said how they'd blow it up.

i do have a problem with SG-1 being the "let's go save the world every day" types... there are at least 17 other teams... why don't these ever get into "saving the world" situations?

Or more realistically, "Lets go save SG-1" missions.

I can't take credit for asking why this elite military unit didn't have an instruction manual for their own bomb. The film critic Roger Ebert made that point about Armegeddon. This ep really was a rip-off wasn't it. I'm surprised Bruce Willis didn't show up for a cameo.

Also, I don't believe that small cargo ship could possibly have enough engine power to tow a giant asteroid into hyperspace, especially since is was crippled.

I wouldn't have complained if Liv Tyler showed up in a cameo for the episode.

the things that made me think "amerggedon" in this eppy:

a) the government meeting that guy at the start
b) the whole "nobody else has detected this huge asteroid except this amateur bloke... hell even all these big ass professional telescopes haven't detected it" bit.
c) the method of blowing the asteroid into two pieces
d) landing a ship (hold on, what's the title of the show again?) on the asteroid
e) the whole "oh no! the bomb's gonna explode!" bit, which was so fake
f) the stupid "which wire?" bit... don't writers ever learn that this is the biggest cliche EVAR!?

hmm... an episode that robs ideas from films and uses cliches is never a good thing. usually when SG-1 uses cliches they make it clear, usually with a joke such as O'Neill saying "wow, this is a cliche"... in this case they shamelessy used them... and expected us to believe that we would really think the world would be destroyed, that the bomb would explode, that SG-1 would remain stranded on the planet.

for 40 minutes of SG-1 escapism, it was a good episode. but, compared to some of the better ones (even the better "let's fly around in spaceships" episodes the writers seem to love nowadays) this eppy sucked.
