I presume they'd have to have some sort of space radar to predict if there's any goa'uld ships nearby?

That would need to be a satellite or, rather, at least 3 satellites in a geosynchrous orbit along with the communications system to send the signal back to the ground station. (IIRC).

A ground based system would have only a limited effective range and, without multiple ground based stations situated around the planet, be almost useless.

Nonetheless, radar observatories would be a vital neccessity for "Earth, Jr.". Not only do you need to stand picket for spaceship threats, you have to plot and track any large astronomical mass that may cross the planet's orbit lest the Alpha Site suffers the fate of Edora.

True.

The problem with a ground-based single-site radar would be that, barring a very strange rotation, the coverage you would get is minimal due to line of sight problems and what lattitude off the local equator you're at. (ignoring a tilted access and the implied differences caused by that and the radio-opacity of the atmosphere.)

You also risk, with an actively emitting system, detection at a range more than twice that of your radar's detection range.

The ideal system, from a stealthy perspective, would be a set of orbital passive sensors (including visual, thermal, magnetic anomaly detectors, gravitic, etc.) that detect man-made or "sentient" created phenomenae while being hard to detect by conventional means themselves.

The communication system would, ideally, be a tight beam microwave or laser system with minimal off-axis detection potential.

Something they have to consider deploying in the future, if this world is to be Earth's prospect as a refuge world.

True. Until then, don't get too "loud" and get noticed, eh?

I thought this would have been the most obvious thing in the first place.

Unless it's somewhere a Goa'uld that isn't afraid of the Asguard would start looking.
