This "stupid Yank tradition" is what springs up when a group of people give up the comfort and familiarity of their homeland and end up far, far away from their ancestors in a land that is strange, scary, and wholly capable of killing you. A North American winter is nothing to laugh at. As prosperous and bountiful the forests and farmlands are on the American frontier, the New England winters were perfectly capable of starving off entire colonies.

The Thanksgiving feast was a celebration by the Puritan Pilgrims in surviving the previous winter and attaining a boutiful harvest in the late summer, ensuring that the following winters would not be as harsh. It's a celebration of survival.

And, as an added bonus, it's 2 days off work (4 day weekend), good food, family and friends, good sports on TV, good mini-marathons on TV (Buffy and X-Files), and in general a time to reflect and relax.

We need to focus on the positive this year.
