yes necessarily, what i was reffering to was the 39? symbols on each gate, when ya got planets across the galaxy, believe me, you aint gonna see any of the constellations you do here on earth, hell, go to alpha centauri and you aint gona see the same constellations, and thats the closest star weve got to us! the idea of constellations as reference points to calculate a coordinate in 3d space sounded good for the movie, but doesnt really bear up to much scrutiny, like ive said before, bah, its sci fi!

Thats the problem, constellations are just that, shapes that we can pick out from our point of view, they arent any specific points in space, the stars that we pick out in a single constellations are formed by several stars which are nowhere near each other, often many light years apart, but just appear to be a specific area in space when we look up at our night sky, from other planets many light years away from our own, the stars we make out as constellations would have no relationship whatsoever, just like the hundreds of stars in our night sky that havent made it into the constelation club!

Ok, how about this...
The constalations have nothing to do with the stargates them selves. They are only there because they were made by the "Gods". Actually, could it be that the constalations are like phone numbers. Assigned to each gate, and a planet is like a base station, like the place where you hang up a cordless phone is to a phone. Does that work...

nope lol, because the whole point about the gates is that they could calculate the coordinates using the abydos cartouche as a base, and then compensate for stellar drift etc using the constellations as a reference point. It would be much better if they could just use some sort of mathematical system, but eh!

now i think sam's first thought was to get her and joe home...she saw that they were dialing earth and knowing that you exit the gate at the same velocity that you enter it (upgrades) they had to get closer to the event horizon so they wouldn't go splat against the wall. so she lowered herself, sent the code adn was planning for joe to climb down, maybe so she could lower them both into the gate...then she saw the purple (it looked blue to me actually) blob of death, realized that since she'd already sent the code that earth was defenseless aginst the bio weapon, and joe couldn't make it in time, she had to go through to tell them to close the iris to protect earth, sacrificing joe in the process.

Once Sam saw that they were dialing Earth she should have known they were up to no good. However, she also would have known that the Iris would protect the Earth from whatever nasty the Aeschen had thought up. By entering the Iris code she put the entire planet at risk. If her timing had been a couple of seconds off it would have been disasterous. I hate to contradict Jack but she didn't "do good" in that situation.

Maybe the chevrons only 'lock' onto one star but to distinguish between them the ancients/goa'uld/whatever put in the constellations?

Re Sam, the writers had to get her home but keep Joe there but they did a half-arsed job of it. Either that or the SGC were going to keep the iris open to anything from the Aschen world, but then why would Sam need to send her code though? Arg, I don't know!

nope, they cant! and also, the constellation thing really is a blooper! theres just no way it should work, mathematics the way they shoulda gone, but wheres the fun in that i ask ye? stargate teh show works fine jus the way it is.

It doesn't appear that they are able to determine the size or nature of any object going through a wormhole, just the presence of matter making the transit.

What would be nifty and convenient to the SGC would be, one day, for them to gain the ability to find out where a wormhole is originating from. Some sort of radio probe or calculation of incoming stellar radiation that would tell them from at least what corner of the galaxy the incoming travelers departed from.
