Why dont the SGC

develop some kind of advanced radar system with which to map the other side of the gate from.
The gate allows EM radiation to pass through both ways, so it would be pretty handy, or even just airborne threats on the other side.

Good point. I believe that Radar is uni-directional... at least the kind you'd need to pinpoint an object. So, your range would be limited to the edges of the gate. It would have tunnel vision. All outgoing and incoming (reflections) of EM signatures would be cut off at the edge of the gate.

But it would be good just to find out what's immediately on the other side of the gate. And it would be quick... much faster than a MALP.

I dont think so in that, using a similar scanning technology to the F22 type RADAR, urm..sigh...forgot it all now, but the point is, remember that EMP device they lowered infront of the gate.... something like that... it would definitely be a good tool in the arsenal, and it would be able to have a relatively decent wide angle if it scanned from relatively near the gate.

It wouldn't be a problem with the "tunnel vision" thing if the radome was close to the event horizon.

Yeah,

I have seen very small radar devices before. Has any one ever seen those "quail com" devices the transport people use?

It tracks, maps, communicates text/voice/video, and is very small.

Awesome device. The military use it and alot of other companies use it.

Not strictly on topic but I always wonder why they walk everywhere why don't they use a vehicle of some description (quad bikes motorbikes whatever) surely it makes sense when they go offworld and need to cover a lot of ground or go on rescue missions to have transport. It cannot be because they are worried about pollutants the malp, uav and people themselves are all a potential source as we have seen in several episodes.

I've always wondered about that too.
Like in one episode, Daniel says to O'Neill "it's a few miles away" and O'Neill sighs. Why don't they just bring a vehicle through the gate and drive there?

Good point. I think we should see that. I can think of several cases where having a couple of fast vehicles would be an excellent idea. Perhaps it has to do with pollutants in the SGC or something? Mayube their environmental systems can't handle a running engine (or several).

Quads would rock, they would also aid in escaping things and stuff.

OK, so what idea do you all have for equipment etc, the missiles seem to have been used to appease the fandom, but I think we need some more tech like that lowerable radar, etc etc... come on people, speak.

A Vauxhall Nova going through the gate. Oh, seeing as the gate is one way, it would be quality to see (probs in the last ep) some high and mighty Goa'uld waiting at the gate for the return of his Queen or such like and then to see O'Neill and Teal'c resume their game of Golf. Thwack. (Cue soundtrack... (another Goa'uld bites the dust))
