Maybe he participated in the evacuation during the fall of Saigon in '76. That is, if they award the ribbon for that action.

So When did the Vietnam War actually run? Eg. World War II was between 1939 and 1945 (officially).

It started with advisors in 1962-1963, then escalated with troop buildups in '65. Reached a peak of troop involvement in '67. The official US involvement in the war drained off in 1973, and in 1976, the South Vietnamese capital fell to NVA advances and the country was united under Communist rule. The US had maintained an embassy and diplomatic contact until the fall of Saigon.

Of course, most of the US troops involved in the evacuation of the US Embassy in Saigon were Marines (US Marines are tasked with the guarding of embassies and consulates). It's hard to tell how much involvement a United States Air Force officer would have had in Vietman in 1976.

Actually, Saigon fell on April 30, 1975.

Jack is just old enough to have been there at the end, assuming he was born in the mid-1950's.

Both of the following are found in O'Neill's rack:

Vietnam Service Medal:

Awarded for service from 3 JULY 1965 to 28 MARCH 1973 for 30 consecutive/60 non-consecutive days or combat service.

Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal:

At least 6 months of service between 1 MARCH 1961 and 28 MARCH 1973

From:

And:

http://arpc.afrc.af.mil:8080/dpssp/awards.htm

Assuming he enlisted at 17 and later became an officer (an impression I got.), he would be at least:

2002
- 1972 (March '73 minus 6 months...)
----------
30
+17 (at enlistment)
----------
47

Unless of course, he lied about his age and enlisted at 15 or 16...

...However, he wouldn't be an officer at that age.

BTW, this SHOULD be the badge everyone wears (Hammond with a star and wreath...):

I don't think he would have thought it to be great if he was sent to 'Nam.
LOL. Unless it was the year he got out of 'Nam...

It's cutting it pretttty fine to put him in there and have him forty years old in 1997-98 IMHO. But this is just me. We would have heard more about time spent there by now for sure. We do hear alot about Iraq in 1980-something and I really think this is the stuff where O'Neill cut his teeth on combat/infiltrating/being captured. And what about that thing from Gamekeeper where he was reliving a takedown of some Russan safehouse thing??

And Deathbunny has the low-down on that pin. But the nit-picking military Gaters out there noted that it later "disappeared" from his ribbons in later episodes when they got a bit of guidance from Msgt. Giannazzo, I believe. LoL I just can't believe there's folks picking apart racks out there for fun! Just watch the show, for cryin out loud!

Is this AF space-something-or other, or something specific to the show? I heard the AF is now in charge of space security of sorts (securing satelites from terrorist tampering and the like).

It's the US Air Force Space Command pin, relevant to NORAD and the SGC's cover story of being a deep-space radar telemetry research facility.

If the US Air Force is anything like the UK, you can enter on a commision (Officer Status) at something like 17 if you have the grades at school, then you are instantly 2nd Lieutenant. From there I think it is only about another 2-3 promotions to Captain, then only one saving the world to Major, there's nothing wrong with Carter being a Major.

Short of a Battlefield Commision, which requires previous enlistment and a war and is also VERY uncommon these days, all US Military Officers have at least 2 years of college...

...and a minimum legal enlistment age of 17.

From: http://www.academyadmissions.com/ad...ns/eligibility/

"To be eligible to enter the Academy, you must be:

A citizen of the United States. Your citizenship must be finalized prior to entering the Academy. You must submit proof of citizenship if you were foreign born or naturalized. Authorized international students are exempt from this requirement.

Unmarried with no dependents.

Of good moral character.

At least 17, but less than 23 years of age by July 1 of the year you would enter. The age requirement is public law and cannot be waived.

Meet high leadership, academic, physical and medical standards."

She was a genius, but that particular minimum age isn't waiverable...

Actually it's the other way around. I mean, if the pin design predates 1963 when the series originally aired (?) The original Trek's production designers had to work from something and surely did just what the SG art and production people do: draw from real life.
