I have never seen, and don't plan to see, "A Beautiful Mind". So, I went into "Shadow Play" with a completely open mind. And I loved it.
LOVED, LOVED, LOVED, LOVED... well, I'm sure you get the picture. ;-) Dean Stockwell (oh, yeah, FYI: he's my absolute favorite actor) was SOOOOO wonderful in this episode!
My wish came true last night: Dean got to be in a few scenes with Richard Dean Anderson... I loved the wonderful looks on Dean's face whenever O'Neill would throw out one of his typical comments.
Dean Stockwell was, as he always is in a guest spot on a show, the best part of the episode. His portrayal of a man with an ill mind was touching and sad. I noticed how he only seemed to get those headaches whenever he was having a hallucination; nice touch.
Yeah, I'm kinda disappointed that we didn't learn much about Jonas, but maybe since Dr. Kieran didn't die (I had originally thought that perhaps that would happen; don't ask me why... I just did), Jonas might see him again and we could learn more about their relationship and Jonas' past. Of course, so far as I know, Dean won't be back on the show this season, so who knows.
I was fortunate enough to have been able to watch "Meridian" earlier yesterday (huge file, but it was very high quality), so I wasn't lost at all watching "Shadow Play".
I loved it when that woman from the delegation asked SG-1 if they had been in contact with their leaders, and O'Neill quipped, "Why, yes, we have..." Pause. "They send their best." *laughs heartily* I still can't get over that one.
Another O'Neill quote that I loved was closer to the beginning... The delegation is talking... and I can't remember what was said, but O'Neill's response was, "Did you ever think that maybe we don't care?" (or something like that)... A very "loud" comment, but it sure got his viewpoint across... Very good scene.
Ah, heck... every scene in this episode was wonderful. I loved it when Dr. Kieran was hallucinating an image of Jonas... You could tell when it was an image and when it was really Jonas.
The first time I watched the episode, that first scene after Jonas talked to that head-minister-person-thingie, when Dr. Kieran was in his (office?), Jonas seemed a bit off to me, too... Then I gasped, thinking his change of attitude was because he'd decided to trade the info the head-minister-person had asked for... But, then, I thought about it and realized Jonas was better than that. So, I puzzled over it. It wasn't until my second viewing later last night that I realized it was one of Dr. Kieran's hallucinations.
I had already known Dr. Kieran was schizophrenic from reading spoilers, but the hallucinations part didn't register with me 'til I remembered the "Touched By An Angel" episode that had dealt with the illness last season..... That's when I realized that Dr. Kieran was hallucinating... And, immediately, I suspected that the whole resistance did not exist. And I suspected right.
Very poignant scene (thanks to... someone-on-another-board-who-I-can't-remember-their-name... for that description) at the end, when Dr. Kieran is talking to the real Jonas, and looks up and sees the resistance-leader-guy, and Jonas looks up and sees nothing.
Anyway, a really touching episode, and my absolute favorite out of all the episodes I have seen so far (with the exception of "Cold Lazarus"... what an episode!)

PS: I'm guessing the suits and ties and the style of them were used in order to help the audience easily realize the fact that Kelowna is equivalent to our '30s or '40s (correct?).
PSS: I agree. Jonas is no Daniel. But he's not *supposed* to be. He's supposed to be his own individual character, and I believe he is. Just a warning to you folks: I'm a Jonasarian.
